New Skill

Post by dufyman » Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:09 pm

I was wondering what all of you thought the new skill might be. My idea is sleuthing or spying. I think that Jagex tipped their hand a little with that holiday event, the one that introduced a magnifying glass to rs. it seems that skills come in pairs, like wc and fletch, mine and smith etc. Maybe this is a pairing for thieving. Just my 2 cents worth and I would like to know what yours is. :-?

That's a tough one. Jagex said that, after Summoning, they'd never ever tip their hand again with any hints, leaks, etc. It will come, and it will be out of the blue.

That being said, I would very much expect the skill to be a cash sink. So much coin has come into the game as a result of 76K tricking, I really think Jagex needs/wants to burn it all away.

It's hard to imagine it being another combat skill because (1) we just had a new one (Summoning) and (2) what the heck else could we have? The only thing I could think of would be a buffing/healing type aspect, but that would seriously mess up herblore and fishing/cooking. So that wouldn't make too much sense.

The new skill, I think I heard, will be F2P as well as P2P, so it will/can be interdependent with:
- Crafting
- Mining
- Woodcutting
- Smithing
- Firemaking
- Fishing
- Runecrafting
- Cooking

I could envision a skill that introduces loads of new Smithing and Crafting items to be used in the creation of... whatever this new skill requires.

I can't give an exact answer. But I think it's going to be something where high level cash-heavy players will transfer a lot of G P to lower-level players who will be willing to skill to create the items used in high level advancement of the new skill. There will, of course, be a vendor whom we'll have to use to spend money for certain items that basically takes coins out of the game altogether (like planking in Construction and shards in Summoning).

People have said some version of sailing/shipbuilding is possible. I don't see how we'd actually USE such a skill in game, though, other than as a diversion. But then again, Player Owned Houses were largely diversionary (though they do have some practical uses).

Although I can envision this sailing/shipbuilding skill as an instanced/minigame type skill designed to add a new PvP dynamic to the game, i.e. naval battles. Players lose boats, need to build bigger and better ones, etc. After losing a lot of PvP excitement, such a thing could definitely replace it.

I've used a lot of words to say very little, and NOT answer your question. LOL.

Good point Dufy :)

I said the same thing when we had that seemingly "useless" reward of a magnifying glass.
To use it with thieving makes sense to me too, but if Sean is correct (no hints etc) then this is a moot post I just made

I just made some breakfast and cleaned up afterwards, the entire time thinking about the possibility of a Sailing/Shipbuilding/Naval Warfare type skill.

And sweet fancy Moses, it sounds very likely and plausible.

First of all, we just got a TRIDENT weapon. Very aquatic, eh?

Plus, Mother Mallum is somehow below the water with the Sea Slugs. Maybe that was that "dark" presence we just experienced?

There's a big spot out in the water on the RS map. Could be an island, or it could be a "Watery Wilderness".

Opens up a whole lot of new monsters, weapon and armor types, rewards, etc.

LOL i have also heard and read a lot about sailing. You are also correct about it being f2p and p2p, that's what one of their updates said last year... so much for no hints lol :-? You do make some good points about being a big gp vacuum, especially in the post pvp trick era. I hope not thogh i am constantly broke from summoning lol .

The time period of RS is really based on the medieval times, i agree with sailing as the next upcoming skill, naval warfare does sound cool. But shouldn't there be horse-riding? I come to think of knights and jousting as being somewhat a very popular activity back in medieval times.

I'm not really sure what the skill could be. I'm hoping its some sort of gathering skill bringing new resources into the game. As for sailing though, theres been many quotes from jagex mods saying sailing will never exist. Seems rather silly of an idea to me anyways as we already have ships to all the locations we currently need.

Well I don't think it would be another island, though I could be wrong. I read on RS forums from a J-mod that they want to complete all the black space on the coastlines before anymore islands/continents. Sailing seems unlikely but the money sink would come from planks again don't you think?

Horseback riding seems like a logical step but there is no need for increased speed really. Especially with the plethora of modes of transportation already.

Personally I have no idea what the new skill would be, but people have said it could be Skinning. But let's hope not.

I don't think Riding would ever happen. If it did, they would release a trial version of sorts, meaning we would have a single creature to ride in either a quest or between two fixed points.

It's just too technically demanding for RS's engine. They have a hard enough time making a PC run, I couldn't imagine adding a mount to the picture. I also can't really see how you would train such a skill. If they introduced mounts, I don't think it would be part of a skill.

And remember, any new skill would have to integrate with the other existing skills somehow. That's what Jagex asks for when they ask for skill recommendations: how it would integrate with our current skills. They like inter-dependence.

Rubber chicken!
I think rubber trees will be added to farming, then you can make rubber for rubber-chicken-making!
At level 1 you can only make the rubber chicken like the one from the event.
At higher levels rubber chicken can fight for you, at the highest levels the chicken can even train YOUR skills for you when you are LOGOUT of the game!

So many rumors and speculation it makes my head spin.

If I had to guess I would say Bard (yuck) because I remember a leaked image of a cape of accomplishment with a harp on the back. I do hope not though. Could you imagine training it? "
You play a fruity song on the fruit and gain 2 xp" I'd like to think it was a cape for unlocking all of the songs rather than a skill cape. I'll try to find an image and paste it here in a bit.
