This Olympics Thing...

Post by PhelimReagh » Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:38 pm

I'm new to KoA, and only really took time to learn about your "Olympics" (since it had started before signed up). But I've come to learn that the Olympics requires players to get 100K XP in all 24 skills (if I understand it correctly).

That's 2.4 million X P in a week.

Now I've been playing RS since some point in late 2004 or early 2005 I think, maybe near 5 years at this point (scary for me to think about that). Taking into consideration a slow start and various breaks, we can say I've been playing a good 40 months, or about 150 weeks. In that time I've earned about 150 million XP, which translates to about 1 million X P per week. I always thought I played a bit more than I should have over the years.

I don't want to come off as judgmental, but do you think setting an objective of 2.4 million X P is, well, reasonable?

Now I know that no one is forced to participate, I'm sure, and that even if they do there's no compulsion to actually "max out" all skills. But by setting that goal, you're kinda setting that expectation, right? And if folks want to participate in clan functions, it's reasonable to think they'd sign up for this and avoid letting their teammate down, which would mean "maxing out" as many skills as they could.

I dunno. I'm new here, and just wanted to throw out the idea for at least a bit of discussion. This is definitely not the kind of thing I'd sign up for, though I'd love to go hang out on the Fishing Trawler or try a few waves of Barbarian Assault or something.

Just my two unsolicited cents.

I'm bitter that Jagex has spent $50+ million of RS subscriptions developing other games instead of improving RS. If you're reading one of my posts and I even allude to Dungeoneering as a "skill" instead of minigame, keep that in mind.

Well, we have different kind of events. The olympics is one for competitive people who like to see where their limits are, and maybe even go over them. Or for people who just see this as a good oppurtunity and motivation to train some skills they normally don't train so much. For me, personally, 100k xp per skill is not big a challenge, especially since you have a week to achieve it. I realise it can be different for other players. This kind of event is very rare, only 2 times per year at maximum I think.

We have very many "normal" events like fishing trawlers, GWD events, Stealing creation and ..... many more.

We have just very many different ones, so the members can pick whatever they like to do.

have to realize forgive my spelling coz i suck at it. talking with members they saved up for the olys. tons and tons of stuff. But in this clan its normal for them to do that. And to be honest to watch them level is a real hoot, I personally dont do olys. Coz i lazy and dont care. but being in this clan has helped me skill. And all of the KOA family will encorage you to do well. And wont judge you if you dont. Their is a bigger picture here. This is family and they will help you with a vast wealth of knowlege. Olys is a way for them to compete with each other. 400k to 600k xp is not really alot for them. for me to do 100k aday is alot for me. But that is me. And I still have a blast in this clan. I really dont know where i would be with out them. It seems High in xp. But for alot them its just fun.

Enjoy this. Compete and learn From the best adult clan in all of runescape

Clan Olympics (also known as "see who can keep up with Hid") is all just good fun and motivation for leveling. :)

Last year the inter-clan summer olympics were held. (During that 1 week competition, I spent/accumulated 12.7M xp....others had as much as 27M xp in 1 week!). Last summer's olympics and the winter olympics differed significantly in that summer Olympic participants could store up xp prior to the event (sqirks, agility tickets, zeals, pc points, quest xp rewards, etc) and spend them during the week. During the winter olympics, no xp could be stored in advance (with the exception of sacred clay tools). IMHO, how we ran the winter olympics is much better.

One of the biggest challenges with the random formation of olympic teams is developing consensus among the team members. Do the team members want to try and win the event or have a more relaxed, fun skilling time? If the team is divided on how to approach the event, then this may be diffcult for team members to reconcile.

Otherwise, 100k xp per skill per person over 1 week is VERY doable, but it does take commitment. This may be a challenge for lower lvl participants, but if they have team members that can take up the slack, then it works out fine. It's great seeing ppl call out a new lvl every few minutes in the CC. On the downside, it can create RL challenges too.

That's why I participate in skilling week competitions but not Olympics. Between RL and Combat Arms (Master Sergeant 3rd!), I'm simply not competitive in that format as I need to be. I'm also too much of a "focused" player, instead of a little here and a little there, like they do in the Olympics. I will say that I do enjoy seeing the Olympic inspired levels flow in CC. "Congratz! W00T! *thows confetti*" :D

KoA has had experience of 2 olympics in 2009. The fact why 100k was chosen this time comes from that former experience with olympics. 100k should be not too difficult but also not too easy... 4 teams maxed out and 5th team gained 99 %.
And yeah, as Hid said, we have so many different events from skilling to killing. Staff has been trying to organize events for every taste and we never expect everyone to participate. It´s quite natural that people like different things. Noone is forced to attend the events.
Our calendar doesnt show much variety atm (lol) but this is only because we have a new calendar since the beginning of January and we have tried not to host any events during the Olympics.
This week we should have back our normal " clan life" :P and I hope everyone can find the events that they enjoy :D

Just a misunderstanding I think.

the limit isn't there to say everyone is required or even expected to get 2.4m exp.

It is there to say you cannot train on one particular skill, ie, you cant just spend all week cooking. 100k is the max u can do on any one skill.

No one is expected to max every skill, a lot of people do of course, but no expectations are set, other than you have fun participating and doing your best in an event with the clan.

This was my 1st olympics, and I loved it. I was teamed with two players who were significantly lower level than I am, but it didn't matter a bit. We all participated, had a great time, got to know each other better, and made some exp...personally, I made 4.2mil, and gained 3 levels.

Our team came in 7th out of 9. lol

Looking forward to the next oly!

yes...100k exp per skill per person was the limit of exp per team...however you could get them any order or any person(s) u wanted...the best teams took certain skills and one persone maxed for team

expample..king had stuff and did all of summon for our team all 400K

but in the future i have been discussing some possible ideas to modify any future clan oly's and would like to add my 2 unsolicited cents if i can...

take the top members by total level and put them on different teams...
if we have enuf for 9 teams...then top 9 total level members would be on different teams and the rest randomly fill in the teams
reason for this is in a truey randomized team it is possible...however unlikely...but stilll possible for the top 3 to be on the same team...
and just for fun....u can store up all the items u want...but use absolutely no mini game exp towards the oly's...all raw exp only...would be fun i think to try it at least once...however we were more competitive than the las inter-clan event last year...

either way...there are some great guides on the koa forums on how to power level...so the info is there for anyone to use anytime

we had a blast and would love to do another one with a few tweeks
