I need to gain a couple of levels in order to start the Birthright of the Dwarves quest. Can anyone recommend a way that is cost effective and not too time-consuming. I'm not bothered about making money from it, but I don't want to lose money. At the moment I'm smithing cannonballs in Port Phasmatys (wearing Morytania legs) but I was wondering is there a better way.
All suggestions gratefully received.

Citadel = free smithing xp. Don't forget the fealty xp from your clan cape and the bonus xp when you see the message in your chatbox.

I do pop into the citadel and get what xp I can there, but I need a lot more. I never knew that you could get extra exp from a clan cape, and I've don't know about bonus xp from message is clanchat. Perhaps I'm missing a trick there. How does that work?

After you do enough skilling in the citadel, you'll get a message that you can see the quartermaster for extra experience. Go to the quartermaster on the west side of the central building of the citadel and he will offer you bonus exp in one of several different skills. One of the options is smithing. At level 98, I get about 35k bonus exp per week.
Note that you have to maintain level 3 fealty to have access to the bonus exp.
Back when my skilling and mining levels were lower, I used to use the Explorer ring #4 to get 27 free superheat item casts while mining adamantite to get 27 bars, and then smith those into arrows for some exp and money. It adds up over time.
Clay smithing hammers from stealing creation are also good for bonus exp.
Other than that, I'm not aware of any free methods for smith skilling.

If you have gold ores just sitting in your bank, gold bars are better xp timewise compared to making cannonballs. Make sure you wear your gold gauntlets.
