Teamspeak subscription is up.

Post by Deep_Pain » Tue Feb 24, 2009 6:36 pm

any ideas on a replacement or if we even need one?

EDIT:

moved to democracy as there isn't really a need for this to be in admin.

After paying for teamspeak for over a year, I decided to cancel the subscritpion, it really wasn't worth the costs for the 2 or 3 people at most that used it.

So did you use it? would you want it back? any ideas for a replacement? and do you use messenger of any form?

I think I've been on teamspeak twice. It was fun, but I don't really need it. just textmessages works for me most of the time.

The teamspeak we had was very uncomfortable to use in my opinion. In order to speak you had to push the button and the sound was just horrible. Some ppl I did not hear at all, voice coming like from a bucket :D

Maybe there is an alternative?

I don't see the need but yet I never tried it.
My wife makes faces at me as it is...I could only imagine the faces I would get if she saw me with a head set speaking "runescape" to the computer. I am afraid her "geek" tolerances :-B may overload! :P

BUT, if it is something the clan wants to do, I would certain be game (when no one was home :P lol).

I like Teamspeak, personally. I've used it several times with the clan on combat related events, and it always made the difference (though we own anyway). What I'd like to see is the clan using it more often.

It actually worked without pushing a button, like 99% of other voice mediums on the internet, when using in large groups it is best to disable this, as there is nothing more annoying when you have a bunch of people on this or anything simular, than it coming on because of someones music, or dog barking, children yapping, people farting, people heavy breathing cos they have the mic too close, and the feedback loop this causes if a few people have it set to auto. We asked people to set a button to talk, it didn't require one. Push to talk is one of the most important functions of any voice chat, not a bad thing :P

I tried assigning a talk button, but that never worked for me. What worked best was setting the mic sensitivity a little low as to not pick up extra sounds, and then just speaking a little above normal volume when I wanted to be heard. Never had a problem doing it that way. :)

I did enjoy using it. I loved to hear all my clan mates voices. It just seemed to give the clan a more personal feel.
It was most valuable when doing new events. You can explain things so much faster and clear up any questions in a flash.
It also was used a lot when we first started organizing for the Olympics during discussions, again because it was so much faster than typing and easier to "brain-storm".

I admit though not many people used it and it was a chore just to get them to register.

I imagine if we needed to talk about something, we could always go to Zybez Ventrilo and get one of their Admins to give us a private room from time to time. Of course this means everyone would have to register for using it on their website (its free) well ahead of time. This is because they have to verify your IP address and then email you a password. This is not something that happens quickly, although they claim most time it happens in one hour but they tell you can take at least eight hours also.

I have always prefered Ventrilo over Teamspeak mainly because I have used it longer. Ventrilo had two options I really liked. One was an equalizing process that kept everyone you heard at the same volume level automatically. And the Second was if that still didn't make some people loud enough you could easily turn up just their volume. This is because some people's mics just would not pick up sound well enough.

Yeah that was the main difficulty I think, getting people to join. On most games TS or Vent are well used, doesn't seem that way on RS, I guess for regular training etc, which is 90% of the time on RS, there really isn't much need. But for any sort of event that needs organisation, or there is a chance you might die, it is so much easier / safer than typing.

I think it's an RS specific problem over it being anything to do with us being an adult clan, I'd say on a lot of games, most users of voice chat are adults, I was very surprised at how many people were shy or embarrassed at how they might sound :P It seems like on RS a lot of people, have never used or even heard of TS or Vent and the like.

I must admit I wasn't on TS at all in recent months. But with other stuff, I hadn't been on RS pretty much for months, I had after I moved gone out and bought myself a top of the range microphone that is sitting doing nothing now we got rid of TS.

I would be happy to maybe have a trial month or something, say with a few weeks notice, so we can advertise it well, give people time to dig out their old microphones, give people notice and make sure everyone is familiar with what it is and how it works, before putting it online again. Then try it for a month and push it like we have a few times in the past.

I really don't have an issue paying for it, if it gets used. But with the present climate and seeing the usage stats at an average of no one in there at all, it felt like i was thoring money down the drain.

If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to give it another go, if people came up with some ideas on how we could get people using it.

I'm always interested in doing it, if no one is home at my house. The wife doesn't like me talking on it when she's home because she feels like she's being exlcuded from the conversation (I use a headset with mic). But if she's not home, I'll get on there and talk about nothing. :D
