I have not been able to access Zybez at home for over 3 days now (try doing clue scrolls without it, not a very nice experience). I could access it at work so I started looking into. It is a REAL problem. Here are the excerpts from Runescape Community Forums (Zybez Forums) explaining the problem and solutions. The last one is my post (I just love to stir up poop!) Oh yeah some tell me if this is a safe fix, please.
1) I can confirm that this is a DNS issue... the DNS isn't propagating correctly for some people, which means simply that some people can't get to the site.
(most people with Verizon, Canada Bell and Canada Aliant are experiencing this problem)
This is very much a hack, but it should at least make Zybez accessible for anyone having problems:
In Windows XP/Vista:
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. [If your system has a different drive or path, you probably know what that is; adjust it as needed.]
- Find the file named 'hosts', and open it in notepad.
- Add this line to the end of the file:
74.55.208.243 www.zybez.net
- Save the file and exit.
- Try to load Zybez! If it doesn't work yet, close the browser and try again.
2) For those of you that are getting access denied/path errors while editing the hostfile: save the file elsewhere, such as your My Documents folder, edit it, THEN move it back to the system32 folder, making sure to replace the old host file. Vista wouldn't allow me to edit the file directly.
3) I think I've figured out what it is.
It requires a bit of explaining, when you load a website www.Zybez.net it has to query the DNS servers one by one, until it gets and answer (An IP).
First it queries your own Nameserver, either one you have set up or one your ISP has set up, it checks the root servers (the main DNS servers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_server) for where to look, the root servers then point your nameserver off to another server, then another server, until one of these servers tells you what the IP is. Try to understand, basically, its a computer telling you to go from A to B to C to D, until on of them gives you the answer you wanted.
Ok, Zybez.net have two nameservers where their record (their IP) is on. You query either one or the other, based on server loads, location and other effecting attributes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_robin_DNS) for Zybez's current IP. Now some of you, the ones without this problem, are querying the primary nameserver (ns1.gameover.com) and getting the site's IP and everything is working fine. For some unfortunate people out there, you are trying to query (ns2.gamover.com), but this server appears to be offline, and your requests are timing out. Meaning you are not able to acquire the IP, meaning you cannot load the website. Basically, you ask one server for the IP, and he gives you it, some people are having to ask the other server for the IP, and its not replying.
In theory this should be a 70/30 divide of people working/networking. The only permanent fix is for whoever has control over Zybez's DNS records, to remove that second nameserver from the record. Modifying your host.txt file should solve this problem, BUT I wouldn't keep it on permanently, keep on top of this topic for when the issue has been resolved, then quickly remove it. You don't want Zybez to have to change their IP, and you stuck trying to load the old IP.
4) Zybez can add a new quest guide in hours but can not fix this "simple" problem in over 3 days. I guess they are waiting for advertiser to start puilling out before they get the message and get to work on keeping their business profitable. Who needs economy woes when you have this kind of lack of response to trouble with their website, otherwise known as their sole source of income.
This truely is a shame too, because Zybez is by far superior to the other Runescape Help Websites out there.
Maybe at the least someone of authority who is associated with the webite can post on this thread and assure us they are "working" on it or how about just acknowledging that there is a problem and they are aware of it! You know, three pages of posts probably is a good indicator something is amiss.
Just a thought.
