No HD for me atm

Well, the new ubuntu is great, just a shame sun are a bunch of lazy wankers.
Everything works, except hd rs.
It really doesn't help that the linux community isn't free to modify any coding.
Hence, we have to wait for sun to fix it. And, let's face it, 64bit linux problems are hardly at the top of their priority list.

I had used the icedtea-6 package up until upgrading buntu yesterday, but it just won't ask whether to allow RS.
Hence, I can only run RS in unsigned mode, which, yup that's right can't do HD. Oh joy :(

Hmm, I've just thought of something, brb
(edit: nope, that didn't work either)

The IcedTea still seems to work the best, but I wish it'd just let me mark RS as trusted.

Here are pics to entertain you for now :P

The whole Oracle-Sun thing isn't going to help either.
Anyhow, what if use a 32bit browser?

I still haven't messed with the new verision yet myself, but the problem I had with getting a friggin driver for my wifi card and seeing your problem is driving me to wait a while, until I have a good block of time to mess with it.

Screw this, imma go back to the dark ages and just download and run crappy old 32bit linux
I'm so sick of the lack of 64bit support, I mean 64bit linux has been out for well over 3 years.
3 YEARS!!!!! and still a simple little java piece of **** won't work properly.

K, 54mins of download, oh joy.

So it IS possible to run 32 bit linux on a 64 bit system then...hmmmm...I may need to give that a try myself. What would I have to do, reinstall a fresh version or is there a way to "downgrade"? lol
I have 8.10 64bit now...could I just "upgrade" to 9.04 32 bit?

Not only is it possible, It's very recommended for your first time linux install.
Linux can get quite complicated, as there is quite a lot to learn that is new to most windows users.
And 64bit linux is a can of worms, it took me around a month of little tweaks here and there to get it running A ok.
Another recommendation is to use V8.10-desktop-i386-LTS, simply because it is an LTS (long-term-support) release.

I don't think you can change the filesystem architecture whilst upgrading via update manager.
Although, I don't recommend that path to upgrading anyway.
It'd probably have to be a clean install, and even if it didn't, I'd definitely recommend it.

Hmm, I wonder if my problems have been centered around my desire to use the new ext4 filesystem.........
I'll fiddle with installs/filesystems another day, i just want to play hd :(

Chris, all x86 CPU's you can get now are 64bit capable (with the exception of some cheap mobile ones)
If they aren't nudged into longmode they will act exactly* the same as non-64bit-capable cpu's.
* except the CPUID instruction, obviously.

When they start, they act like ancient 16bit x86's even. But a million times as fast, and with some extra functions (SSE etc, enabled even in all 16bit modes)

So anyway. 32bit linux will just "forget" to put the cpu in longmode, and it all works.
This whole story only works for x86-type CPU's though, will be different for Itanium and PPC etc..

I see, thanks guys.
Looks like I'll just do a clean 8.10 32bit install then (which does work flawlessly for my old clunker laptop)...when I have the time that is.
Thanks again.

OMFG

Same problem after a clean 32bit version install
So i guess being 64bit wasn't the problem

I'm so unimpressed

Do you think it might work in Wine? The Runescape technical forum might help too. There are a few Linux users up there.

I use Linux all the time at work, but my home systems are all running XP.
