Email Security and You

Our forum software (phpBB3) has a feature where other users can email you. A security issue arises because phpBB3 can expose your email address in certain situations and this feature is turned on by default.

Today we made two changes to how phpBB3 handles your email address:
  1. This feature is turned off for every existing forum account
  2. This feature is turned off by default on new forum accounts
Note that Admins can still email you if required, and other email function such as password reset and PM notification are unaffected.

If you would like to turn this feature back on, simply navigate to User Control Panel > Board Preferences and turn on Users can contact me by e-mail.

Securing your Email
Email security is not just about having a good password, it's also about having good password recoveries. If your email account works off birthday (or some other piece of personal information that can be discovered on the internet) then it's a good idea to change your password recoveries to information that is not discoverable. If birthday is a part of your password recovery process then is a good idea to remove your birthday from your KoA profile and Facebook/any other social network.

Thanks,
Tamal

I've added a new paragraph to the first post about securing your email account.
