Yeah, I grabbed pies at like 3-4 levels under the advanced courses, you only need the level boost for the first fork away into the advanced course, everything else after that is fine if you lose the boost.

What I did, is since Magic is pretty good at most monsters, I wore magic power gloves and boots, and had power magic top/bot, magic tokkar-kal, and slayer helm. Had my ruinic accuracy aura as well.
